You go and do likewise

Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

Luke 10:36-37

Many of us are pretty familiar with the parable of the good samaritan. A quick background to the context. "And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”"

And Jesus explains with a parable. Now here is the thing.. what does this look in our today's context ? What is God requiring of us ?

- Have compassion (v33)

And here is the best part... This is not about showing compassion just to those who like you or who you get along with .. God is requiring of us to show love to even those who despise us. Would our heart be moved with compassion for them?

We read in verses 34 and 35 , " He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back."

- He bound up his wounds , he poured out his oil and wine he was carrying

I dont know why the Samaritan was journeying down that road.. for sure he had some agenda.. no idea who all were waiting for him... But he decided to stop and bind up the wounds of someone

- He set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him

This basically means this guy had to walk ! Instead of the comforts of riding there he walked.. And no idea how far the inn was...

He took care of him. And then the next day he paid money to the inn keeper and also ensured he would stop on the way back to pay any difference.

This guy basically literally did ALL he could !

We have heard this so many times.. sounds like a cool story.. but hey this is the living word of God and God says "You go and do likewise"

Are we so consumed in our own little worlds that we refuse to see the dying world surrounding us ? People wounded and bleeding from abuse , hurts , abandonment , people facing eternal death because they do not know who Jesus is ...

Is our heart moved with compassion ? Have we gotten so wrapped up in our agendas , our jobs, our families that we refuse to see those lying around and move on ? Have we become selective in who we help ? (just the ones whom we like who fit a standard profile ? )

Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

God Bless
